Today, I found out my grandpa passed away, I told my friends I wouldn't have a party and instead of condolences my one friend asked 'does that mean I get to keep your present?'. FML

Your friend might just be socially anxious and didn't know what to say, and if he didn't even know your grandfather it is understandable because he had no relation with him. He probably was trying to break the awkward silence with something cuz he can't stand it. It seems like an honest mistake. If i were in that situation, I would probably make the same mistake. Don't take it to heart.
