Today, I attended an elderly man's funeral. As I approached the casket his wife said, "Thank you for coming." I replied with, "No, thank you." FML

I'm sorry op. In cases where someone we know dies our body can get very stressed and cause us to say/do things that really don't make sense... sorry for your loss

Funerals are very awkward and sad.. Everyone is in their own state of mind. Hopefully she understood what you meant to say.

I heard of this one women who went to her dads funeral, and she was in such a state of shock her natural reaction was to laugh. Her grandma wasn't happy but her mom understood. The women who laughed went through some break downs before the funeral though

You are very polite, just not at the right time.

"no, thank you for reminding me that I too will die someday."

Why should i attend someones funeral if theyre not going to attend mine?

Because if you don't, their ghosts will come back and haunt you in a satanic style, at any time of the day, any day of the week, any week of the year. They will make you miserable, hightens your paranoia, and make you suffer. DO YOU WANT THAT?

I don't get how that's a big deal?? Someone explain....

I was at a funeral visitation last night. There was the longest line of family I had ever seen, and I completely understand when your mind just kind of goes out the window.. even if you had the right thing to say beforehand. Funerals are hard on everyone, so I think you'll get a pass. -head pat-

Awkward! The wife of the deceased man probably was more focused on her loss than your reply, though.
