Today, I am cleaning out my classroom at the end of the year. I specifically told my students to take all food home or throw it away. So what do I find in a desk? A nice, old, disgustingly rotten apple. It actually disintegrated into black goo when I tried to clean it out. FML.

I hope there weren't maggots... Something my 1st grade teacher did was check our desks every month after school & the "desk fairy" would leave a present if it was clean (like a licorice stick or stickers or a fancy pencil). Regardless of grade level, I think your students knowing someone is judging their mess would help them to clean up more often.
