There Is Some Real Life 'Footloose' Shit Happening in Iran Right Now And Everyone Needs To Know About It
Iranian teenager Maedeh Hojabr was arrested on Friday for dancing to Iranian and Western pop music on Instagram without the head scarf, the BBC reports.
In Iran, dancing with members of the opposite sex in public is banned, except in front of immediate family members. There are also laws that restrict women's clothing.
In support for Hojabr, others in the country began to upload videos of themselves dancing under the hashtag that translates to #dancing_isn't_a_crime. Many other dancers have reportedly been arrested following this incident as well.
Although there's nothing funny about this sort of oppression, it has got to be said: Is this not the exact plot of Footloose? Where is Ren McCormack when you need him?
"If you tell people anywhere in the world that 17 and 18-year-old girls are arrested for their dance, happiness and beauty on charges of spreading indecency, while child rapists and others are free, they will laugh! Because for them, it's unbelievable!" Blogger Hossein Ronaghi tweets.
